Our story
Hello! We’re John and Neill, two designers, ex-London, and now very much Suffolk.
Fen Lodge Shepherd’s Huts is something we’ve long dreamed of. Our house, with its wild meadow and outbuildings has given us the chance to create a business that combines our love for nature with a love of good design.
We’re big on pets too. Blodwyn the Irish Terrier, and cats, Iris and Betty complete the Fen Lodge family.
Neill - Head Shepherd, planting designer and tutor
I spent 13 years teaching planting design, horticulture and drawing and graphics at Capel Manor College in London before the lure of Suffolk took over. Country life suits me much better than town and I’ve now got the space (and the time) to try out new planting ideas. When I’m not hosting the huts, I run short courses at Woottens of Wenhaston and plant design workshops for Crocus.
John – Second Head Shepherd, architect and potter
I’ve got my own architectural practice, working on private homes both here and in London. With Fen Lodge, I’ve extended the existing building, cladding it in larch to reflect the local Suffolk style. My side hustle is the pottery studio where I make a variety of pots on my wheel and by hand. I’m in charge of the kitchen garden too – you might find some of my tomatoes or berries in your breakfast basket if you’re lucky!
